Corrections policy
We get things wrong. What matters is what happens next.

The distinction we work to
A typo is a typo. Fixing a misspelled name, a broken link or a formatting error needs no note, and we make those quietly.
A fact is different. If a number, a date, an attribution or a claim was wrong, that is a correction, and it is labelled as one. We do not silently edit a published story in a way that changes its meaning.
What a correction looks like
When we correct a substantive error:
- the article is amended;
- a dated note at the foot of the article states what was wrong and what it now says;
- the modification date is updated, so aggregators and search engines see that the article changed rather than assuming it is untouched.
We do not update the modification date for cosmetic edits. Telling search engines that an article changed when it did not is both untrue and, at scale, actively harmful to a publication.
Withdrawal
On the rare occasion a story is wrong beyond correcting, we do not delete the URL. The article is replaced with a note explaining that it was withdrawn and why. Making a mistake disappear is worse than admitting it.
Reporting an error
Write to corrections@raredollar.com with the article URL and the specific claim you are disputing. Include a source if you have one. Corrections are answered ahead of everything else in the inbox.
If you are the subject of a story and believe it is unfair rather than inaccurate, use the same address and say so. We will read it.
